Walk into any NC ABC store and you’ll notice the product list includes a section called the Boutique Collection. It’s a phrase that sounds marketing-adjacent, but it has a specific meaning in the NC ABC system — and understanding it helps you find what you’re looking for.

What Is the Boutique Collection?

The Boutique Collection is a designated category within the NC ABC product list for premium, artisan, or limited-distribution spirits. Products earn a Boutique designation when they meet criteria related to:

  • Price point — typically higher-priced products in their category
  • Production scale — smaller distilleries with limited annual output
  • Distribution — spirits that aren’t widely available through standard commercial channels
  • Market positioning — products positioned as premium or artisanal by the producer

The Boutique Collection includes craft bourbon from smaller Kentucky distilleries, single-malt Scotch expressions, Japanese whisky, aged agricole rum, and other spirits that wouldn’t fit neatly into the standard category list.

How Boutique Products Are Listed

When a distillery or importer applies to the NC ABC Commission to have a product listed in North Carolina, they can apply for either standard listing or Boutique listing. The Commission reviews the application and, if approved as Boutique, the product is added to the Boutique Collection price list with its own NC code.

Boutique products are available for any NC ABC board to order and stock — but boards choose which Boutique items to carry based on their customer base, storage capacity, and sales projections.

Why You May Not Find It at Your Local Store

A standard product in the NC ABC list is expected to be available at most or all stores in the state. A Boutique product is available but not required — your local board may not stock it if they don’t have demand or storage for it.

This is why you can look up a Boutique Collection item in the NC ABC price list, see that it’s an active listing, and then walk into your local store and not find it on the shelf.

How to Get a Boutique Item

Ask your store to order it. NC ABC stores can order Boutique products for you — typically with a minimum quantity and a lead time of several days to a few weeks, depending on warehouse inventory and delivery schedules. There’s usually no special fee for this.

Call before you drive. If you’re looking for a specific Boutique product and willing to travel to multiple stores in a region, call ahead. Stores with more shelf space (larger stores, urban stores) are more likely to carry a broader selection.

Check multiple stores in a metro area. Boutique stock varies significantly within a single county. A store in downtown Durham may carry a different Boutique selection than a suburban Durham store.

Check the monthly specials. Some Boutique Collection items appear on the monthly specials list at reduced prices — a good opportunity to try something you might not have purchased at full price.
